Fort Walton Beach Boater Dies After 21-Foot Seacraft Capsizes in Choctawhatchee Bay
On May 30, a 21-foot Seacraft with three people aboard capsized in Choctawhatchee Bay in the Florida Panhandle, sending all three occupants into the water. The U.S. Coast Guard rescued two women, who were taken to an area hospital, and pulled Donald Johnson, 53, of Fort Walton Beach, from the water, but he died from his injuries. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating.

Cable Layer Niwa and Container Ship Papu Collide Head-On in Arabian Sea Off Karachi
On the night of May 28, the 146-meter cable laying vessel Niwa, en route to Karachi from Salalah, collided head-on with the 215.5-meter container ship Papu, bound for Jeddah, in the Arabian Sea off Karachi, Pakistan. The Niwa suffered significant bow damage and was towed to a berth in Karachi, while the Papu lost a container overboard and proceeded to anchorage for inspection. An initial investigation placed fault on the masters of both vessels; no injuries were reported.

Engine Room Fire Strikes Tanker Meghna Trader Off Chattogram, Bangladesh
On the morning of May 28, the 128-meter tanker Meghna Trader, carrying 12,000 tons of soybean oil, caught fire in its engine room while anchored off Chattogram, Bangladesh. The crew sealed the compartment and activated the CO2 smothering system, and tugs assisted by the Bangladesh Navy and Coast Guard extinguished the blaze roughly three hours later. Autopsy Confirms Drowning in Lincoln Pond Canoe Capsize That Killed Syracuse Man
New York State Police announced on June 2 that an autopsy confirmed Ran Rai, 30, of Syracuse, drowned after a canoe capsized at Lincoln Pond Campground in Elizabethtown, Essex County, on the night of May 15. Rai and a companion entered the water when their canoe flipped; dive teams later located him unresponsive, and the manner of death was ruled accidental.
