Unmanned Cargo Ship Declared Total Loss After Projectile Strike Off Al Mokha, Yemen

A cargo vessel was hit by multiple unidentified projectiles approximately 40 nautical miles southeast of Al Mokha, Yemen, at around 1100 hours on August 17, according to a UK Maritime Trade Operations warning. The ship was unmanned at the time and no injuries were reported, but the damage was severe enough that the vessel has been declared a constructive total loss. The strike is the latest in a sharp deterioration of maritime security in the southern Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

External Firefighting Team Boards Ultra-Large Containership Marie Maersk Off West Africa

An external firefighting team boarded the 19,076-TEU containership Marie Maersk on Tuesday, August 19, to fight a cargo fire that had been burning since crew reported smoke from containers on August 13 while the ship was bound from Rotterdam to Southeast Asia. The vessel was moved toward the coast near Liberia so shoreside resources could assist, supported by three tugs and a firefighting-equipped platform supply vessel. Maersk reports all crew are safe and the ship's machinery, steering and navigation equipment remain fully operational.

Two Hospitalized After Boat Strikes Jet Ski on Conway Chain of Lakes, Orange County, Florida

A man and a woman riding a personal watercraft were hospitalized after a boat struck their jet ski on the Conway Chain of Lakes in Orange County, Florida, on Saturday, August 16. Both were reported in stable condition. The boat operator fled the scene but was stopped a short time later by Belle Isle Police officers and arrested on a charge of boating under the influence.

Boater Arrested After Slamming Into Docked Vessels at Bahia Mar Marina, Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale police arrested a boat operator after he allegedly rammed multiple docked vessels at the Bahia Mar Yachting Center around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 16. Officers from the Fort Lauderdale Police Department and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission responded after 911 callers reported an out-of-control boater. The collisions left shattered glass across a dock and tore chunks of fiberglass from the striking vessel's bow; formal charges are pending toxicology results.
