Seven-Year-Old Dies After Houseboat Capsizes on Lake Pend Oreille, Idaho
A 7-year-old boy died after a 1968 houseboat carrying three adults and four children capsized as it headed west out of Johnson Creek into Lake Pend Oreille in Bonner County, Idaho, on Sunday, August 2. The vessel began listing heavily to one side before overturning and trapping occupants inside. The child’s grandmother and 5-year-old sister were initially believed drowned but were resuscitated after life-saving measures.

Cargo Ship Struck by Projectile in Strait of Hormuz, Loses Power
A cargo ship reported being hit by an unknown projectile at about 2 a.m. local time on Tuesday, August 4, while transiting the Strait of Hormuz roughly 23 miles northeast of Al Khasab, Oman, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations Center. The vessel subsequently lost power. The strike is the latest in a series of attacks on merchant shipping in the waterway amid the ongoing U.S.–Iran conflict.

NTSB: Pilot’s 39-Minute Personal Phone Call Contributed to Fatal Houston Ship Channel Collision
In an investigation report released August 6, the National Transportation Safety Board found that a Houston ship pilot’s extended personal cell phone conversation and failure to maintain a proper lookout contributed to the fatal 2024 collision between the bulk carrier Yangze 7 and the towing vessel Miss Peggy in the Houston Ship Channel. The pilot had been on a 39-minute non-operational call that ended just over two minutes before impact.

Man Overboard Survives an Hour in Shuswap Lake, British Columbia
A young man who fell overboard unnoticed after dark near the Cinnemousun Narrows on Shuswap Lake, B.C., survived about an hour in the water and swam to shore before rescue crews reached him. Sicamous RCMP deployed Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Station 106 and Shuswap Search and Rescue teams to sweep-search the water and shoreline after boaters reported him missing.
