Ferry Fire Off Indonesia's Madura Island Leaves at Least Five Dead, Dozens Missing

A fire broke out aboard the passenger ferry Mutiara Santosa 2 on August 2 in waters off Madura Island, Indonesia, while the vessel was carrying 271 people on the Surabaya–Makassar route. At least five people were killed and roughly 41 others remained unaccounted for as rescue operations continued. The 160-meter ferry was engulfed as passengers evacuated into the water and onto nearby vessels.

One Killed, One Injured After 37-Foot Boat Strikes Shoals in the Detroit River Near Grosse Ile

A Brownstown Township, Michigan resident was killed and a Rockwood resident was injured early on August 2 when their 37-foot Rinker struck man-made habitat shoals southeast of Celeron Island in the Detroit River near Grosse Ile. The grounding occurred at about 2:52 a.m., and the boat was roughly 80% out of the water when emergency personnel reached the scene. The crash remains under investigation.

Two Toronto Residents Killed in Boat Crash on Lake Rosseau in Muskoka, Ontario

A 30-year-old woman and a 32-year-old man, both from Toronto, died after their boat crashed on Lake Rosseau near Backenrig Bay in Ontario's Muskoka region on the night of Friday, July 31. Responding crews found a significantly damaged vessel balancing on a rock ledge, and the Ontario Provincial Police investigation into the cause of the crash continued through the weekend.
