At Least 44 Dead After Overloaded Ferry Capsizes on Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe
A government passenger ferry operated by the Rural Infrastructure Development Agency capsized in rough weather on Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe, on Tuesday, August 11. Police updated the death toll to at least 44 on Wednesday, with 77 people rescued; the vessel had a capacity of 90 but was carrying 114 adult passengers, five crew, and an unknown number of children. A survivor said passengers pleaded with the operator to turn back in the choppy conditions before the vessel went down.

Container Ship Vela Nova Believed Struck by Missile in Gulf of Oman Off Pakistan
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported an incident on Tuesday, August 11, involving the Panama-flagged container ship Vela Nova and military forces in the Gulf of Oman, roughly 71 nautical miles off the coast of Pakistan. Maritime security sources said the vessel is believed to have been hit by a missile while transiting the area. The incident adds to a series of recent attacks on commercial shipping in and around the Strait of Hormuz.

Boat Explodes After Refueling at Cedar Grove Marina on Norris Lake, Tennessee
A boat exploded and caught fire shortly after refueling at Cedar Grove Marina on Norris Lake in Claiborne County, Tennessee, on the morning of Sunday, August 9. When the operator attempted to start the engine, the vessel exploded, forcing both occupants to jump into the water; a passenger suffered significant burn injuries and was airlifted to UT Medical Center. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency is investigating.
