Tanker Bergstraum Rocked by Explosion and Fire in the Skagerrak Off Hvaler, Norway

On the afternoon of August 10, 2026, the 124-meter tanker Bergstraum, loaded with sulfuric acid, suffered an explosion in the Skagerrak near Hvaler, Ostfold, Norway. Welders performing repairs in the forepeak ignited fumes, triggering a blast strong enough to blow iron doors off their hinges, followed by a fire that the crew controlled with foam while rescue helicopters and patrol boats responded. None of the 15 crew members were injured, no pollution was detected, and the incident is under investigation.

Three Fishermen Rescued After 11 Hours Clinging to Capsized Boat Off Incheon, South Korea

Three men in their 20s and 30s were rescued on the morning of Monday, August 10, 2026, after spending more than 11 hours clinging to their capsized motorboat in waters near Choji Island off Ongjin County, Incheon. The men had gone fishing and lost contact with their families before being found at about 6:12 a.m. wearing life jackets. All three were reported in stable condition.

Freediver Killed by Boat Propeller While Spearfishing Off Lampedusa, Italy

A 29-year-old freediver, identified as filmmaker Cristiano Daniele Giamporcaro of Caltanissetta, Sicily, died after being struck by the propeller of an inflatable boat while spearfishing off Punta Sottile, Lampedusa, on Saturday, August 8, 2026. He was freediving without scuba cylinders when the boat, carrying two people, struck him and inflicted fatal injuries. The Agrigento Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation on suspicion of nautical homicide.

Woman Charged After Three-Boat Crash Injures Four on the Amite River, Louisiana

On August 11, 2026, Louisiana authorities charged Nanette Normand, 63, of Denham Springs, with four counts of negligent injuring, careless operation of a vessel, and failing to file an official operator’s report following a July 18 crash involving three boats on the Amite River. Four people were taken to a hospital after the collision, which occurred around 8:20 p.m., and one woman remains hospitalized with her injuries.
