Nine Dead, Two Missing After Boat Capsizes on Volta Lake, Ghana
At least nine people were killed and two remain missing after a boat carrying 14 passengers capsized on Volta Lake near Yeji in northern Ghana on Wednesday, April 9. The dead include two women and five children. Five male passengers were rescued by local responders and community members. According to the Ghana Maritime Authority, the vessel was overloaded and none of the passengers were wearing life jackets. Authorities also noted the passengers had boarded at an unauthorized landing site. A team of divers from the Ghana Navy and Ghana Maritime Authority continues to search for a missing woman and child.

At Least 21 Missing After Boat Capsizes on Lake Kivu, Eastern Congo
A boat capsized on Lake Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Tuesday, April 8, leaving at least 21 people missing. Twenty-three passengers survived the incident. The vessel was traveling to the town of Makengere after departing from a local market town when it sank. Deadly boat accidents are common on Lake Kivu and other waterways in eastern Congo, where overcrowded wooden vessels and late-night travel contribute to frequent tragedies. In October 2024, at least 78 people died in a ferry capsizing on the same lake.
