Three Killed in Ballina Bar Yacht and Marine Rescue Capsize off NSW, Australia

Three people died on the evening of May 4, 2026, after a yacht ran into difficulty crossing the Ballina Bar off the far north coast of New South Wales. A six-member Marine Rescue NSW crew responded to the distressed yacht around 6:15 p.m. local time, but their rescue vessel rolled in 2.5-meter swells and strong winds while crossing the bar. Two volunteer rescuers, aged 78 and 62, were killed, and the body of a third man believed to be in his fifties was recovered on the sand near the South Ballina break wall. Four other crew members made it to shore with non-life-threatening injuries.

As of May 4, 2026, three people had died, one passenger was critically ill, and seven cases (two laboratory-confirmed and five suspected) had been identified, with onset dating between April 6 and April 28. The World Health Organization has indicated that limited human-to-human transmission is suspected, an unusual feature for hantavirus.
