Swedish prosecutors have arrested the captain of the Norwegian-flagged cargo ship Misje Verde on suspicion of negligence in marine traffic after the vessel collided with a recreational boat carrying a family of four in the Kattegat north of Gothenburg late on July 28. A woman and her young daughter were killed; a man and his son were rescued and hospitalized. The captain, arrested Thursday evening as a flight risk, was awaiting a charging decision due by noon Sunday, August 2, while the Swedish Accident Investigation Board reviews the ship’s voyage data recorder.

Three Rescued After Catamaran Capsizes on Lake Erie Near Fairport Harbor, Ohio

Three boaters were pulled from Lake Erie on Thursday evening after their catamaran overturned near Fairport Harbor, Ohio. The Coast Guard alerted Lake County dispatchers around 5:43 p.m., and crews from the Fairport Harbor, Painesville City, and Mentor fire departments reached the vessel and brought all three ashore by 6:09 p.m. Officials said everyone aboard was wearing a lifejacket and no one was injured.
