Coast Guard Searches for 6 After Losing Contact with Disabled Cargo Boat Following Typhoon Sinlaku

The U.S. Coast Guard is searching the Pacific for six people aboard the 145-foot U.S.-registered dry cargo vessel Mariana, which reported a starboard engine failure off Guam on April 15 as Super Typhoon Sinlaku battered the region. Communications were lost on the afternoon of April 16, and an HC-130 Hercules search aircraft was forced to return to Guam due to heavy winds. The vessel's last known position was approximately 125 miles north-northwest of Saipan, with search efforts continuing as conditions allow.

Sailboat Collides with Longboat Pass Bridge on Florida's Gulf Coast

The sailboat Hula Girl struck the Longboat Pass Bridge between Longboat Key and Bradenton Beach around 10 a.m. on April 17, temporarily closing the southbound lane. Strong tidal currents following a recent new moon are believed to have been a contributing factor. Longboat Key Fire Rescue, Longboat Key Police, the U.S. Coast Guard, and Florida Fish and Wildlife responded; the vessel appears to have lost or lowered its mast, and no injuries were reported. Traffic was restored by about 10:45 a.m.

Missing St. Petersburg Boater Tony Le Found Dead Near Sunshine Skyway

Pinellas County Sheriff's Office Dive Team members recovered the body of 63-year-old Tony Le on April 12 at a depth of about 19 feet in the channel south of Maximo Park. Le fell from a family boat near channel marker 18 the previous morning, April 11, while the vessel was cruising at approximately 10 miles per hour near the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Witnesses were unable to locate him in the water. Authorities describe the death as accidental.

Three Rescued After Boat Capsizes on Lake St. Clair in Macomb County

The Macomb County Sheriff's Office Marine Division rescued three boaters from Lake St. Clair on April 13 after their vessel capsized about a quarter mile east of the Nine Mile Road Tower in St. Clair Shores, Michigan. A passing vessel reached the scene first, and the three victims were clinging to it when Patrol Boat 4 arrived at approximately 12:37 p.m. All were transported to the 9 Mile Road boat launch, where the St. Clair Shores Fire Department conducted medical evaluations.

Reckless Murder Charge Filed After Alabama River Boat Crash

Newly released court documents indicate alcohol may have contributed to a fatal March 7 boat crash on the Alabama River, roughly 1.3 miles north of Northern Boulevard in Montgomery. William Alexander Marks Acreman, 30, of Wetumpka, was charged with reckless murder and first-degree assault after victim Barranger died of his injuries on March 24. Investigators allege Acreman was operating a vessel with no navigation lights after drinking at a riverside restaurant and later dumped alcoholic beverages after the collision once authorities were alerted.
