250 Missing After Rohingya Refugee Boat Sinks in Andaman Sea

At least 250 people, including Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi migrants, are missing after a fishing trawler carrying nearly 280 passengers capsized in the Andaman Sea en route to Malaysia. UN agencies reported on April 15 that the vessel departed Teknaf, Bangladesh on April 4 and is believed to have sunk around April 7 or 8 due to heavy winds, rough seas, and severe overcrowding. Only nine survivors had been rescued by the Bangladesh flag carrier M.T. Meghna Pride, and a survivor reported that traffickers locked passengers in fish-hold storage compartments, where at least 30 suffocated.

Alabama River Boat Crash Driver Arrested After Victim Dies

William Alexander Marks Acreman, 30, of Wetumpka, Alabama, was arrested on April 16 and charged with reckless murder and first-degree assault following a March 7 boat crash on the Alabama River in Montgomery County that has now turned fatal. Johnathan Barranger, 30, of Nashville, Tennessee, one of three occupants injured in the crash near Northern Boulevard, succumbed to his injuries on April 14. Acreman was booked into the Montgomery County Jail on a $90,000 bond, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.

Okinawa Fatal Boat Capsize Probe Continues One Month Later

Japanese authorities are continuing their investigation into the March 16 capsizing of two boats carrying Doshisha International Senior High School students off Henoko, Okinawa, which killed a 17-year-old female student and a boat captain and injured 14 others. The Japan Coast Guard's 11th regional headquarters in Naha has seized the two vessels and is searching facilities connected to the operator on suspicions of professional negligence resulting in death and injury. Japan's education ministry has also launched a separate probe into school operator Doshisha over the fatal accident during the study trip.

Solo Fisherman Rescued From Upturned Hull Off Swanage, UK

A solo fisherman was rescued on April 14 after his 24-foot fishing boat suddenly capsized approximately four nautical miles offshore, leaving him clinging to the upturned hull. A passing yacht spotted the casualty waving for help and issued a mayday call, prompting HM Coastguard to launch the Swanage Shannon-class all-weather lifeboat. Before the lifeboat arrived, another fishing vessel managed to pull the cold and shocked casualty from the barely-floating hull; RNLI crew then transferred him to the warmth of the lifeboat's wheelhouse for treatment.

Deputies Rescue Two From Sinking Boat in Tampa Bay

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office rescued two occupants of a disabled vessel taking on water in Tampa Bay on April 14. Deputies from the HCSO marine unit located the sinking boat at approximately 10:45 a.m. and safely transferred both people to shore without injury, marking one of several recent Tampa-area marine rescues in the past week.
