Teen Killed by Boat Propeller After Being Ejected at Carlyle Lake, Illinois
An 18-year-old Centralia High School student, Hunter Nichols, died late Saturday afternoon on the east side of Carlyle Lake in the Coles Creek area. Authorities say Nichols was a passenger on a boat and was ejected when the vessel struck a wake, after which he was struck several times by the propeller. The search was suspended at dark and resumed Sunday morning; his body was recovered around 7:30 a.m. The Clinton County coroner listed the cause of death as multiple injuries from the propeller strike, and Illinois DNR police led the search.

Two Hospitalized After High-Speed Boat Capsizing on Lake Macatawa, Holland, Michigan
Two people were hospitalized Sunday evening after a boat overturned on Lake Macatawa off Kollen Park, with first responders dispatched around 5:10 p.m. Deputies say the vessel struck a large wake at high speed, causing the bow to rise sharply before the boat came down on its side. The 43-year-old operator was taken to U-M Health West in serious condition and a female passenger was treated at Holland Hospital for minor injuries. The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate.

Boat Burns and Sinks on the Calcasieu River Near Contraband Bayou, Lake Charles, Louisiana
One person was hospitalized Sunday afternoon after a boating accident on the Calcasieu River near Contraband Bayou. A witness reported flames shooting 10 to 20 feet into the air, and the vessel had already sunk by the time nearby boaters reached the scene. The Lake Charles Fire Department reported the injured boater in stable condition. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is investigating.

Two Injured in Boating Accident on the Angelina River Near Jasper, Texas
A man and a woman were injured Sunday afternoon in a boating accident on the Angelina River just south of the Highway 87 bridge west of Jasper. The incident was reported around 4:00 p.m. Authorities have not released the identities of those involved, and the circumstances of the crash remain under investigation.

Jet Skier Critically Injured in Collision With a Boat Off Tierra Verde, Florida
A man riding a personal watercraft was left in critical condition after colliding with a boat near 8th Avenue North in Tierra Verde just after 7 p.m. Saturday. A bystander on a nearby vessel jumped into the water and pulled the rider to safety, keeping him above water until help arrived. The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said Sunday the victim was in critical but stable condition and that investigators do not believe speed or impairment was a factor.

Three Fishermen Found Dead After Shintoku Maru Is Lost Off Nichinan, Japan
The roughly one-ton fishing vessel Shintoku Maru was lost in the Hyūga Sea off Nichinan, Miyazaki Prefecture, in the early morning of September 3. The boat had departed with three crew to net-fish for spiny lobster and failed to return. The Japan Coast Guard and local fire department launched a search, and a fisherman assisting the effort found the bodies of all three men drifting about one kilometer off Tonoura shore. None of the crew were wearing life jackets, and authorities had issued wind and wave advisories for the area.

Fire Aboard Container Ship Maersk Lanco Roughly 170 Miles Off Brazil
The 300-meter, 99,900 dwt container ship Maersk Lanco reported a fire in the South Atlantic about 170 miles off the Brazilian coast on September 4 while en route from Santos to Morocco. The vessel requested immediate assistance, and the bulk carrier Mazowsze, the fishing vessel Kestrel and the container ship Wieland diverted to the scene. The extent of the fire and the condition of the 26 crew aboard had not been detailed; early reports pointed to a possible engine-room origin.

River Cruise Ship Viva One Strikes Bridge on the Mosel; Master Injured
On the night of September 4, the 135-meter passenger vessel Viva One struck the Wolfer Brücke while attempting to pass beneath it at Traben-Trarbach, Germany. The wheelhouse was severely damaged, with the roof torn back and multiple windows shattered. The master was injured and taken to hospital; none of the 150 passengers aboard were hurt. Water police opened an investigation into why the wheelhouse had not been lowered before the transit.
