One Dead, Six Missing After Tugboat TNS Catcher Capsizes Off Busan, South Korea
The 286-ton tugboat TNS Catcher capsized around 1:29 p.m. on September 2 roughly nine kilometers southeast of Oryukdo island, off Busan, South Korea. The vessel had left Busan Port to tow the Liberia-flagged container ship MSC Ikaria IV, which had been involved in an earlier casualty, and was carrying eight crew — six South Korean and two Indonesian nationals. One Indonesian crewman was pulled from the water by a passing merchant ship and one South Korean crewman was recovered unconscious and later pronounced dead, while six remain missing; the tug came to rest fully submerged in about 87 meters of water.

Twenty-One Injured as Penang Ferry Teluk Bahang Collides With Oil Tanker MV Mekar Jaya
The passenger ferry Teluk Bahang, carrying about 140 passengers and 45 to 50 motorcycles, collided with the oil tanker MV Mekar Jaya inside Penang Port limits at approximately 8:40 p.m. on September 1. The impact knocked over numerous motorcycles and threw passengers to the deck, injuring 21 people; eleven were taken to hospital by ambulance and the remainder made their own way for treatment. Malaysian authorities later confirmed all injuries were minor and that this was the first collision involving the catamaran ferry service since it began operating in 2023.

Passenger Trawler Sinks After Head-On Collision With Ferry on the Bhairab River, Khulna, Bangladesh
A passenger trawler carrying an estimated 30 to 35 people sank after colliding head-on with a ferry in the Bhairab River near Jailkhana Ghat in Khulna city at around 9:45 p.m. on September 1. Local boatmen reached the scene and pulled passengers from the water, but 28-year-old Rakib Khan of Sener Bazar remained missing. River Police, the Fire Service and Civil Defence, and the Coast Guard launched a search operation.

Ferry Irini K Sinks Under Tow Off Sifnos, Greece
The ferry Irini K sank on September 2 about one nautical mile east of the island of Sifnos after suddenly taking on water in its engine room. The vessel was under tow from Kalymnos to Perama by the tug Exantas in northerly winds of Beaufort force 4 to 5 when the flooding began. Both people aboard were rescued by the tug's crew and landed at the port of Kamares, with one taken to the Sifnos Health Center for precautionary examination; the local emergency plan was activated and two Hellenic Coast Guard patrol boats were dispatched.

Man Drowns While Paddleboarding With His Daughter on Ely Lake, Minnesota
A 43-year-old man died in an apparent drowning on Ely Lake in Fayal Township, Minnesota, roughly five miles south of Eveleth, after falling into the water while paddleboarding with his juvenile daughter on the evening of September 1. St. Louis County Sheriff's deputies and Eveleth police were called at about 7:10 p.m.; the girl had pulled her father part of the way toward shore, where lake residents helped bring him out of the water and began CPR. Authorities reported that neither the man nor his daughter was wearing a life jacket.

Fishing Boat Sinks Near the Ullal Estuary, Mangaluru, India; Five Fishermen Rescued
A fishing boat sank after being caught in heavy seas near the Ullal estuary in Mangaluru, Karnataka, on the evening of September 2. All five fishermen aboard were rescued by the crew of a nearby fishing vessel and no injuries were reported. The estuary mouth is a known hazard for small craft during periods of strong swell.
