Two Dead, About 40 Rescued After Overloaded Vessel Capsizes Off Mona Island, Puerto Rico

A makeshift vessel carrying an estimated 60 people capsized roughly 10 miles off Mona Island, between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, around 11 p.m. on Sunday, September 27, 2026, after a fight involving a machete reportedly broke out aboard. Passengers, who had no life jackets, entered the water and some tried to swim toward the island. The U.S. Coast Guard rescued at least 40 people and recovered two bodies on September 28, and the search for others continues.
