At least 41 people were confirmed dead and 49 were rescued, with search efforts continuing for the remaining passengers. Congolese officials note that boats on the lake are often overloaded and lack sufficient life jackets.

Missing Boater's Body Recovered Five Miles Downstream on the Mississippi River Near Osceola, Arkansas

A boat capsized after being pulled under a barge on the Mississippi River near Sans Souci Landing in Osceola, Arkansas, on the night of Sunday, September 21. One of the two people aboard was rescued, but the second man was swept downstream into an eddy off the main channel. Arkansas Game and Fish Commission wardens recovered his body roughly five miles from the accident site by Thursday, September 24. The cause of the capsizing remains under investigation.

Search Continues for Paddleboarder Missing on Okanagan Lake, British Columbia

An adult male paddleboarder went missing on Okanagan Lake between Fintry Provincial Park and Lake Country, British Columbia, after high winds knocked him off his board around 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 22. His female companion was rescued by Kelowna Fire Rescue; neither paddler was wearing a personal flotation device or a paddleboard leash. Central Okanagan and Vernon Search and Rescue crews, along with drone teams, continued searching into Wednesday, September 23.

Tennessee Man Drowns Trying to Free His Boat From a Sandbar on Lake Eufaula, Oklahoma

A 60-year-old man from Talbott, Tennessee, drowned on Wednesday, September 24, after stepping into deep water while trying to push his boat off a sandbar on Lake Eufaula in McIntosh County, Oklahoma. His brother pulled him back aboard and performed chest compressions, but he did not survive. It was the lake's second fatal drowning of 2026.
