The bulk carrier Merchant Mariner ran onto a reef in the waters off Quang Ngai Port in the Dung Quat area at approximately 11:30 a.m. on September 18, 2026, while carrying 174,614 tons of iron ore from Teluk Rubiah Port to Dung Quat. The grounding caused water ingress in port-side ballast tanks 4, 5 and 6, leaving the vessel with a significant list roughly 15 nautical miles from the Dung Quat anchorage. All 24 crew members aboard — eight Greek and 16 Filipino nationals — were accounted for, and port authorities ordered fuel tank valves closed to prevent pollution while tugs were dispatched to assist on September 20.

Vanuatu Ends Search for 37 Missing After Passenger Ferry MV Matui Sinks Between Santo and Ambae
Authorities in Vanuatu formally suspended the search on September 18, 2026 for 37 people still missing after the inter-island passenger ferry MV Matui sank in rough seas on September 11 while traveling between the islands of Santo and Ambae. Of the 53 people aboard, 14 survivors were recovered and two bodies were found during the first weekend of the response; no further survivors were located afterward. With the search called off, 39 people are now presumed dead in one of the deadliest South Pacific ferry casualties in recent years.

One Dead and 25 Missing After Migrant Vessel Sinks Near Gavdos, South of Crete
A vessel carrying migrants sank near the Greek island of Gavdos, south of Crete, on September 14, 2026, leaving at least one person dead and 25 unaccounted for. The Hellenic Coast Guard rescued 51 people; survivors reported that 77 had been aboard when the vessel went down. The casualty occurred on the central Mediterranean route from Libya toward southern Greece, where the UN migration agency has recorded a sharp year-over-year rise in deaths.

California Man, 67, Drowns After Vessel Capsizes North of Franklin Island in Georgian Bay, Ontario
Ontario Provincial Police responded at about 12:30 p.m. on September 13, 2026 to a report of a capsized vessel north of Franklin Island, northwest of Parry Sound on Georgian Bay. A 67-year-old man from California was recovered from the water and pronounced dead. The OPP marine unit responded alongside the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, the Carling Fire Department and Killbear Marina.

BC Ferries Crews Rescue Two After Fishing Vessel Sinks Near Tsawwassen Terminal, British Columbia
Two boaters were pulled from the water on September 13, 2026 after their fishing vessel sank in the waters between British Columbia's Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island, near the Tsawwassen ferry terminal. The ferries Spirit of British Columbia and Coastal Renaissance each launched rescue craft; both people in the water were wearing life jackets, but one was entangled in fishing line connected to a crab trap that had wrapped around the chest and arms. Both were brought ashore at Tsawwassen and transported to hospital in stable condition.
