China Coast Guard Cutter Rams Philippine Fisheries Vessel BRP Datu Magat Salamat 54 Nautical Miles Off Palawan
China Coast Guard cutter CCG-21585 struck the Philippine Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources vessel BRP Datu Magat Salamat on the morning of Friday, September 18, 2026, roughly 54 nautical miles off Palawan in the South China Sea. The Philippine Coast Guard said the Chinese cutter cut across the fisheries vessel's stern at a distance of about 10 meters, then repeated the maneuver some nine minutes later and made contact. Damage to the starboard side was extensive, with railings bent or detached, stanchions deformed and deck equipment displaced; no injuries were reported. The Chinese embassy disputed the Philippine account, saying the Philippine vessel altered course and accelerated after being warned.

Three Men Rescued After 39-Foot Boat Sinks Six Miles Northwest of Oceanside Harbor, California
Three men were pulled from the water early Thursday, September 17, 2026, after their 39-foot vessel sank approximately six nautical miles northwest of Oceanside Harbor. The crew issued a mayday call around 5:30 a.m. reporting that the boat was taking on water before the transmission cut out; Oceanside Fire Department's Marine Safety Unit and the Coast Guard searched the area of the last radio signal and located the men in the water. The three had donned life jackets and entered the water before the vessel went down, and were treated for exhaustion and mild hypothermia. A later helicopter search failed to locate the wreck or a dog that had been aboard, and the cause of the sinking remains under investigation.

Bloomfield Man, 31, Drowns at Secret Lake in Algonquin State Forest, Winsted, Connecticut
Connecticut DEEP Environmental Conservation Police responded to a report of a person in the water at Secret Lake in Algonquin State Forest in Winsted at approximately 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. The Winchester Fire Department recovered the individual from the water about 30 minutes later, and he was pronounced dead at the scene by a paramedic. Authorities identified the victim as Brandon Pack, 31, of Bloomfield; the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine cause and manner of death, and the investigation remains open.
