Three Crew Abandon Burning Fishing Vessel Hadley Ruth 25 Miles Southwest of Nantucket, Massachusetts

The three crew members of the 65-foot commercial fishing vessel Hadley Ruth issued a distress call at approximately 3:55 a.m. Wednesday, September 16, reporting that their boat was on fire roughly 25 nautical miles southwest of Nantucket Island and that they were abandoning ship. Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England launched an MH-60 helicopter from Air Station Cape Cod and a 47-foot motor lifeboat from Station Brant Point.

The fishing vessel Lightning Bay, which heard the distress call and diverted to the scene, reached the men first and recovered all three from a life raft in good condition. The survivors were later brought ashore at Point Judith, Rhode Island. The Coast Guard conducted an overflight to assess potential pollution; no cause for the fire has been released.
