The passenger and vehicle ferry Virgo Transport 8 lost contact with its operator around 2 a.m. on Sunday, September 13, while sailing from Surabaya, East Java, to Banjarmasin on Borneo, then overturned and sank in the Java Sea. The manifest listed 243 people aboard, 213 passengers and 30 crew, though Indonesian officials cautioned the true figure may be higher. By Sunday afternoon at least 107 survivors had been pulled from the water and six bodies recovered, with roughly 130 people still unaccounted for. The captain had reported seas running up to three meters and a developing list before issuing a distress message.

Sixteen-Year-Old Drowns After Aluminum Boat Flips in Private Pond Near Sulphur, Louisiana

Three teenagers, two aged 16 and one aged 15, took an aluminum boat onto a private pond off East Burton Street in Sulphur, Louisiana, on the night of Friday, September 11, to fish. The boat capsized and the group could not right it; one teen swam ashore and called for help and a second reached the bank, but the third did not resurface. The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Office launched an overnight search with its Marine Division, dive teams and patrol deputies, and recovered the 16-year-old body from the pond on Saturday, September 12. Deputies said the group did not have permission to be on the property or to use the boat.

Redding Man, 60, Drowns After Entering the Water to Recover a Dog at Shasta Lake, California

Geordan White, 60, of Redding died on Friday, September 11, after jumping from a boat near the Bailey Cove boat launch on Shasta Lake to retrieve a dog that had gone into the water. White called for help shortly after entering the lake and briefly held a flotation device thrown from the boat before slipping under and failing to resurface. Another person aboard recovered the dog safely. Cal Fire and U.S. Forest Service crews responded by boat, and Shasta County Sheriff dive team members later recovered White body.
