The Philippine-flagged passenger ferry MV June Aster caught fire at roughly 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday, September 9, while en route from Baseco in Manila to Coron, Palawan, with 117 passengers and 17 crew aboard. Five people were confirmed dead and 86 remained missing as of Friday, with 42 rescued — 38 passengers and four crew — and 33 still hospitalized, three of them in critical condition at Culion Sanitarium and General Hospital. Survivors described an explosion in the cargo hold, which held five motorcycles, an electric car, a forklift, a pickup van and bulk goods, followed by heavy smoke and fire; strong currents and rough seas dragged the burning vessel further offshore and hampered rescue efforts.

Twenty-Five Killed in Fire Aboard Bulk Carrier Ocean Melody at Qingdao Beihai Shipyard, China
Twenty-five people were killed and five injured when fire broke out at about 11:15 a.m. on Thursday, September 10, aboard the Liberia-flagged dry bulk carrier Ocean Melody during repair and inspection work at the Qingdao Beihai shipyard in Shandong province, China. Forty-two people were aboard at the time; 12 were evacuated safely. The vessel had arrived at the yard, which is controlled by state-owned China State Shipbuilding Corporation, on August 31. Chinese authorities have opened an investigation into the cause.

Person Critically Injured After Going Overboard at Bowleys Quarters Marina, Essex, Maryland
Baltimore County Fire Department crews were called to Bowleys Quarters Marina in Essex, Maryland, at around 7:30 p.m. after a person went overboard into the water. Bystanders aboard a nearby vessel pulled the victim out before first responders arrived. The person was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and was listed in critical condition. The call came during a night of severe weather in the area, though officials have not said what caused the fall.

Tug-Pushed Barge Strikes Small Boat on the Elizabeth River Near Waterside District, Norfolk, Virginia
Norfolk Police were notified at approximately 3:20 p.m. Wednesday afternoon of a collision on the Elizabeth River near the Waterside District, where a barge being pushed by a tugboat struck a smaller vessel. A man aboard the smaller boat reported minor injuries once he was returned to shore and was treated at the scene. The circumstances of the collision remain under investigation.
