Worker Killed in Welding Fire at Fincantieri Shipyard in Ancona, Italy
A fire broke out late on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, while two subcontractor workers were welding aboard a vessel at the Fincantieri shipyard in Ancona, Italy. A 54-year-old worker died of severe burns and a 29-year-old colleague was transferred in critical condition to a specialized burns unit in Pisa. Unions have suggested a faulty welding machine may have caused the blaze and have called strikes over safety and subcontractor oversight.

Coast Guard Rescues Fishing Boat Captain After Vessel Sinks in Southeast Alaska
A 40-foot wooden fishing vessel traveling from Sitka toward Ketchikan began taking on water and sank around 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 28, 2026. The lone mariner put on an immersion suit, abandoned a life raft that also began flooding, and swam to Admiralty Island. A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter found him near Murder Cove on September 29 and hoisted him to safety in stable condition.
