One Dead After Boat Strikes Breakwall and Sinks Near Hammond Marina on Lake Michigan
Around 11:34 p.m. on the night of Saturday, July 11, 2026, a boat traveling from Illinois struck a submerged breakwall near the entrance to the Hammond Marina on Lake Michigan in Hammond, Indiana, and sank. Six people aboard were rescued from the water, and one person died, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Officials continue to investigate the crash.

F/V Hustler Sinks Off Ocean Shores, Washington — Two Crew Rescued
The 48-foot fishing vessel Hustler sank four miles west of Ocean Shores, Washington, at around noon on Thursday, July 9, 2026. The two crew members were able to don immersion suits and deploy a life raft before the vessel went down, and were rescued by a Coast Guard motor lifeboat crew from Station Cape Disappointment, with a helicopter and a Navy P-8 Poseidon assisting. The cause of the sinking has not yet been determined.

Fishing Vessel Runs Aground on Reef Off Wangji, South Korea — Three Crew Injured
On the morning of July 12, 2026, a 9.77-ton fishing vessel engaged in octopus fishing ran onto a reef in the Sea of Japan near Wangji, Namhae-gun, South Korea, leaving 3 of the 22 crew members with minor injuries. The South Korea Coast Guard dispatched patrol vessels, inspected the hull, and found no water ingress or pollution; lift bags were deployed to refloat the vessel on the next high tide.

Fishing Vessel Disabled by Engine Room Flooding Near Jukdo Island, South Korea
On the night of July 13, 2026, a 9.77-ton fishing vessel suffered water ingress in its engine room from an unknown cause and became disabled in the Sea of Japan near Jukdo Island, Ulleungdo, South Korea. A Coast Guard patrol boat responded, deployed dewatering pumps to contain roughly 20 cm of flooding, and escorted the vessel safely to the port of Jeodong; the sole crew member was uninjured. Authorities have detained the vessel for inspection and launched an investigation.
