Coast Guard Rescues Four Boaters from 12-Foot Waves off Fire Island, New York
On the evening of April 5, the U.S. Coast Guard rescued four boaters after their 42-foot sportfishing yacht was overwhelmed by 12-foot waves several miles southwest of Moriches Inlet off Fire Island, New York. The group had departed from the Connetquot River near Oakdale when conditions deteriorated rapidly. A motor lifeboat from Shinnecock Station was unable to navigate the heavy seas, so an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter was scrambled from Air Station Cape Cod. A rescue swimmer hoisted all four individuals — two men (ages 55 and 30) and two women (ages 45 and 40) — to safety by approximately 9:42 p.m.

Sweden Releases Shadow Fleet Tanker Flora 1 After Oil Spill Investigation
Swedish authorities released the tanker Flora 1 on April 5 after concluding that available evidence did not support claims linking the vessel to a 12-kilometer oil slick discovered in the Baltic Sea east of Gotland. The vessel, a suspected Russian shadow fleet tanker subject to international sanctions, had been detained on April 3 and boarded by the Swedish Coast Guard as part of an environmental crime investigation. The Flora 1 has a history of frequent identity changes, having reportedly altered its name six times and switched flags nine times. The source of the Baltic Sea oil spill remains under investigation.
